Ultimate Adaptability Guide: Pokemon Master Moves!
Adaptability is a Pokémon ability introduced in Generation IV that enhances the power of moves matching the Pokémon's type. Here's an overview of its mechanics and related details:
Effect
- In Battle: Adaptability increases the Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB) multiplier from the standard 1.5× to 2×. For example, a Water-type Pokémon using a Water-type move like Surf would deal significantly more damage with this ability, raising the move's effective power from 135 to 180 for a base power of 90.
- Terastallization: In games featuring Terastallization (e.g., Pokémon Scarlet and Violet), Adaptability boosts moves of the Tera Type. If the Tera Type matches one of the Pokémon's original types, STAB becomes 2.25× instead of 2×.
- Outside of Battle: Adaptability has no effect outside of battles.
Pokémon with Adaptability
Some Pokémon have Adaptability as their primary or hidden ability:
- Primary Ability: Eevee, Porygon-Z, Basculin (various forms), and Mega Evolutions like Mega Beedrill and Mega Lucario.
- Hidden Ability: Corphish, Crawdaunt, Feebas, Skrelp, Dragalge, Yungoos, and Gumshoos.
In Other Games
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Adaptability increases STAB from 1.5× to 2× in earlier titles but is slightly nerfed to 1.2× to 1.5× in Super Mystery Dungeon.
- In Pokémon UNITE, Eevee with Adaptability gains a temporary Special Attack boost when dealing or receiving damage before evolving into Sylveon.
Trivia
- Adaptability is the first ability alphabetically in the Pokémon series.
- Despite its name suggesting versatility, its effect focuses on enhancing STAB moves rather than adaptability across different situations.
This ability is particularly useful for Pokémon that rely heavily on their same-type moves, making them formidable attackers within their type specialization.
